The apallic syndrome is a clinical picture in neurology that is caused by the most severe damage to the brain. In this case, there is a functional failure of the entire cerebrum or larger parts, while functions of the diencephalon, brain stem and spinal cord are preserved. As a result, the affected persons appear awake, but in all probability have no consciousness and only very limited possibilities of communication (e.g. through concepts such as basal stimulation) with their environment. In Germany, it is assumed that there are at least 10,000 affected people.
